Severe Weather Outlook
For period beyond the next day or two:
_Valid: Tue 13 Jan to Fri 16 Jan
Issued: Sun 11 January 2004 at 01:59 pm
A ridge of high pressure is expected to spread over the country on Tuesday. A cold front is forecast to
approach the South Island late Wednesday and is expected to bring a period of rain to the West Coast.
Some heavy falls are possible about the Fiordland ranges Wednesday night and early Thursday but as
the duration of heavy rain is likely to be fairly brief, confidence is low that amounts will reach warning
criteria. North of Fiordland the front should weaken quite quickly on Thursday morning and will be
followed by another high spreading over the country.

BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR FIORDLAND TODAY
MetService forecasters expect a burst of heavy rain in Fiordland
between about midday and midnight today (Sunday). Rainfall
accumulations of 80 to 100mm are likely during this time, with a
large portion falling in a 6 hour period. Although this amount of
rain is not exceptional for the area, people are advised to be on the
alert for rapidly rising creeks and rivers. The front bringing this
rain is expected to weaken as it moves into Westland tonight, although
some brief heavy falls are still likely about the ranges there
   overnight or early Monday morning.
